I’m a hoarder. I find it very difficult to throw things away that might be useful in everyday life or for my art. So, when my mother-in-law died and we inherited photo albums and various documents, I put them to one side. (More about the inheritance here) In time, and it took a long time before I knew how I wanted to proceed, I worked through some of the material. Behind the papers and photos were personal memories not my own. However, the images brought back to my mind stories of the past told by my in-laws, related to knowledge about both world wars and led to reflection about war in general. I’ve called this project “The Sepia Files”.
"Displaced Persons", 2013. The first in the series.
The Sepia File I, 2022
Collage on salvaged album with photos taken during the period 1929 - 1945. Stitching, acrylics, wax crayons.
Page 3: 'Minsk' was written on the back of the photo. I finished this series of collages in January 2022, a month before Russia invaded the Ukraine.
